In short: AI can help build a website, but it can’t think like your customer or tell you how to stand apart from your competitors. You don’t have to learn AI to get a great website. A designer can use it for you, handle the thinking it can’t, and hand you a finished site you can actually edit.

If you’ve been wondering whether you can just have AI build your business website, you’re not alone. We hear the question all the time. AI is everywhere right now, and it can do some impressive things. So it’s fair to ask: do you still need a web designer?

We’ve been designing websites for small businesses at Creare Web Solutions since 2012, and here’s our honest answer. You don’t have to learn AI to get a great website. You can trust a designer to use AI for you, and put your time back into running your business.

The Website Industry Is Changing Fast

If it feels like everything about websites is changing right now, you’re not imagining it. In early November 2026, Squarespace announced it was cutting about 19% of its workforce, roughly 300 people, with most of the cuts in product and engineering. The company called it a restructuring to simplify how it operates, and it comes as AI tools make it faster and cheaper than ever to throw together a basic website. Squarespace and its competitors are all racing to build AI site builders of their own.

So, the way websites are built is changing. What hasn’t changed is what your customers expect when they find you. In DreamHost’s 2026 Local Business Trust Index, a survey of 1,201 Americans, a website ranked as the strongest trust signal a local business has after online reviews. Even with AI in the mix, 58% of people said they often or always check a business’s website to confirm what they saw on social media, Google or an AI tool. And 60% said an outdated-looking website hurts how they see a business’s quality or trustworthiness.

In other words, AI might change how a website gets made, but your website still has to earn your customer’s trust. That part still takes a designer.

We Use AI

Let’s get this out of the way. Yes, we use AI to help build the websites we create. It makes parts of our process faster, and we’d be silly not to use a good tool.

But AI is a tool, not a designer. The part that makes a website work for your business, the strategy, the judgment and the thinking, still comes from people who have done this for years. Before AI ever touches a project, we’re looking at your competitors, talking with you about your design style, figuring out who your ideal client is, and planning how your pages should flow so we’re answering their questions. That’s the work that turns a website from “fine” into one that brings in business.

What AI-Made Designs Are Missing

You’ve probably seen it already. AI-generated flyers are popping up everywhere. As a designer, I could point out ten things wrong with most of them. They look busy and 99% of the time have graffiti-like elements, the information is crammed together, and there’s nearly always something important missing.

Here’s a real example. As a parent, I get flyers home for my kids’ activities all the time. The AI-made ones almost always list the dates but leave out the day of the week, or have the wrong days of the week. I’m juggling schedules for a lot of different events, so I need to know at a glance whether something is on a Tuesday or a Saturday. For me, that’s almost more important than the date itself.

AI doesn’t think about that. A designer does. A good designer asks how your audience will actually read your flyer or use your website. What do they need to see first? What will they be looking for? Where will they get stuck? Your website works the same way. Your ideal client arrives with a question, and your site’s job is to answer it quickly and clearly.

Your Website Needs to Look Like You, Not Everyone Else

Ask AI to build you a website and you’ll get something built from patterns it’s seen thousands of times. That’s the problem. If your website looks like everyone else’s, including your competitors’, you blend in. Worse, people can confuse you with the business down the road.

And people notice. In a HostingAdvice survey of 500 U.S. consumers, 71% said they can spot a DIY website at first click, and 75% said they’d skipped an online purchase because a website looked outdated or unprofessional.

AI can search out best practices, and a designer knows those too. But a designer also brings years of experience that’s hard to put into a prompt: knowing when rounded corners make a brand feel friendly and approachable, when square corners feel more solid and established, what your competitors are doing, and how to make you look different enough to stand out and be remembered.

Build It on Something You Can Actually Edit

Here’s something people don’t think about until after launch: how will you update your website?

If AI writes custom code for your site, every small change means going back and asking it to recode things, and hoping it doesn’t break something else along the way. That’s why we still build on WordPress. It gives you a real website you can log into and edit, just like a document.

It also works with AI. Your everyday AI assistant can open a page in your browser and change the text the same way you would, without wrestling with code. You get the convenience of AI for quick updates and a professionally built foundation underneath.

The Hidden Cost of Doing It Yourself: Your Time

Can you do it yourself? Honestly, yes. You can research anything these days. There are videos, tutorials and AI tools for every step. But it all takes time, and it’s very easy to go down a rabbit hole of research and come out the other side days later without a finished website.

We’ve seen it in our own work. Putting together proposals with AI, we’ve noticed how much brain power it takes. Giving direction, checking results, correcting mistakes and asking again can easily eat up an entire day. And that’s for people who already know what good looks like.

When you hire a designer, that changes. You have a conversation, maybe an hour, and we take it from there. We do the directing, the checking and the fixing, then hand you a finished product you can look at and say, “Yes, that was worth it.”

You’re Paying for Expertise, Not Just Time

When you hire a professional for anything, you’re not really paying for their hours. You’re paying for what they know: the mistakes they’ve already made and learned from, the shortcuts they’ve earned, and the judgment to know what matters and what doesn’t.

A website is the same. When you work with a designer, you’re getting years of knowing what makes people stay on a page, call a business or fill out a form. And yes, it saves you a lot of time too.

A Note for Nonprofits and Volunteer Boards

This matters even more for nonprofits. Boards and committees change, volunteers come and go, and the website often ends up with whoever has the time that year. When one outside person builds and manages your site, you have a steady go-to person no matter who’s on the board.

We recently used AI to help build an updated York Little League website (link to come once we launch it). Using AI helped get it to the review much faster. And, as the board changes over the years, the league has the same person to go to for updates and any questions.

So, Should You Use AI to Build Your Business Website?

AI is a great tool, and it’s only going to get better. But a tool is only as good as the hands using it. You don’t need to become an AI expert to have a website that’s clear, distinctive and easy to manage. You just need the right people on your side.

That’s what we do at Creare. We’re your hands for getting it done.

Let’s Talk

Every website we build starts with a conversation. We like to talk to everyone before giving a quote, so we can understand your business, your audience and your goals. Book a call with Creare Web Solutions and let’s talk about what your website could be doing for you.

Can AI build my website for me?

AI tools can put together a basic website quickly, and we use AI in our own process too. But AI builds from patterns it has seen before, so it can’t research your competitors, figure out what your ideal client needs to see first, or make sure your site looks different from everyone else’s. That thinking still takes a designer.

Do I still need a web designer if I use AI?

If you want a website that builds trust and brings in business, yes. A designer uses AI as a tool and brings the strategy and judgment to it, so you don’t have to learn AI or spend days directing it yourself.

Can customers tell when a website was DIY?

Many can. In a HostingAdvice survey of 500 U.S. consumers, 71% said they can spot a DIY website at first click, and 75% said they had skipped an online purchase because a website looked outdated or unprofessional.

Why does Creare build websites on WordPress?

WordPress gives you a real website you can log into and edit yourself, just like a document. It also works well with everyday AI assistants, which can update the text on a page in your browser without anyone rewriting code.

How long does it take to build a website with AI on your own?

It can easily take days. Giving AI direction, checking its work, fixing mistakes and asking again takes a lot of time and brain power. When you work with a designer, one conversation is often enough for us to take it from there and hand you a finished site.
