A lot of people ask me how I ended up as a website designer. Is that what you always wanted to be?
No, I wanted to be an architect like my dad. But he’s very jaded, and certainly did not want me to be one. Computers were taking over the industry he said, and so were contractors, no one wants to pay for an architect any more (maybe why there are so many butt ugly houses being built now-a-days?!). And, I didn’t really love any of the colleges that had architecture as a major anyway. Geometry was also probably was my worst subject in High School, so maybe it wasn’t the best choice for me?
I always loved art. But there was no way I was going to become a struggling artist either. Advertising. That was the answer – I’ll major in Advertising. So, that’s what I declared my freshman year of college. Then I took a graphic design class, and I fell in love.
I loved designing on the computer. I loved learning about what colors make people feel certain ways, what fonts said (without saying anything). It was all so interesting, and I quickly went and changed from an Advertising concentration to a Digital Media concentration. Digital Media, what did that mean? Exactly what it says. Learning all aspects of digital media: graphic design, website design, photography & videography. I loved every part about it. It let me design, but it also taught me, it’s not just about design I like, it’s about designing to communicate something, to tell a story, to make people react. And, my whole life I’ve wanted to make a difference, doing something. This helped me learn powerful ways you could use media to present and tell your story (and it also helps me see through the BS when someone is using some of these techniques).
But, I somehow managed to find a job at a small agency, where I learned a lot! I went on to a larger company, as an in-house website manager (my commute to the small agency was just too long), and then went to another company as a product manager, where I learned more technical skills, and developed a better understanding of the technical side of websites.
At that point, I found out I was pregnant and I wanted to stay at home with my baby. I figured I’d take on a couple website design jobs, and work 10-15 hours a week. Well, within 1 year I had so much work, my husband left his job to help me. And, here we are, 5 years later, with a website design company that has grown slowly, and steadily each year. With clients, who are friends that we get to help build their businesses, and communicate their messages to the world.
It’s also given me the opportunity to find some time to keep on my mission of changing the world. I started a little revolution of my own, sunscreen revolution, and was inspired to become a Beautycounter consultant to help educate everyone on what chemicals are actually in the products they are putting on their skin! I’m perfecting my communication skills, and reaching out to try and make the world a healthier place for us all. But, I could never do it all if I didn’t have a passion for well laid out, effective design and messaging.
